Privacy policy

Motorbook is built to need as little of your information as possible. This policy explains what the app and this website do with data, in plain terms.

The short version

  • No account. There is nothing to sign up for and nothing to log into.
  • Your vehicles, dates and records are stored on your device.
  • You are not tracked. There are no advertising trackers and nothing is sold.
  • The only permission the app asks for is your location, used solely to show fuel prices near you. Your location is not stored.

Who we are

Motorbook is an independent iPhone and iPad app made in the UK. It is not affiliated with, or endorsed by, DVLA, DVSA or GOV.UK. If you have any question about privacy, email privacy@motorbook.uk.

What stays on your device

The vehicles you add, their MOT and tax dates, insurance renewal dates, service and cost entries, notes, documents you attach and your settings are stored on your device. We do not receive a copy of these records and we cannot see them.

If you turn on iCloud, Apple may back up or sync this data across your own devices using your Apple account. That stays within Apple's iCloud and is covered by Apple's privacy policy. We still do not see it.

What leaves your device, and why

  • Vehicle lookups. When you add a vehicle or refresh it, its registration is sent to our lookup service, which passes it to the DVLA Vehicle Enquiry Service and the DVSA MOT History service to fetch the make, model, MOT and tax details. The result may be briefly cached to keep the app fast. We do not build a profile of you from this.
  • Fuel prices. If you use the fuel feature, your approximate location (coordinates) is sent to our service so it can return fuel stations near you. It is used only to answer that request and is not stored or linked to you.
  • Apple Wallet pass. If you create a Wallet pass, the details you choose (such as your registration and the dates) are sent to our service to sign the pass, then returned to you. They are not retained.

These services run on Cloudflare. As with any web request, Cloudflare may process technical information such as IP address to deliver and protect the service. We do not use this to identify or track you.

Location

Location permission is optional and is requested only when you use the nearby fuel feature. If you do not use that feature, the app never asks for or uses your location. Your location is not saved by the app and is not stored by our service.

Notifications

MOT, tax and insurance reminders are scheduled on your device using local notifications. They do not require an account and nothing about them is sent to us.

Purchases

Motorbook is free for up to two vehicles. Premium is an optional in-app purchase. Payments are handled by Apple, and purchases are managed with RevenueCat, which processes purchase information (such as a receipt and an anonymous purchase identifier) so your Premium status works across your devices. Apple and RevenueCat handle this under their own privacy policies. We do not receive your name, card details or Apple ID.

This website and the contact form

This website (separate from the app) uses Google Analytics to understand how visitors use it, for example which pages are viewed. Google Analytics sets cookies and processes usage data such as a randomised identifier and approximate location. It is used for measurement, not advertising, and the site carries no advertising trackers. If you send a message through the contact form, the topic, your name, your email address and your message are emailed to us (delivered via the email provider Resend) so we can reply. We use that information only to respond to you.

What we do not do

  • We do not sell or rent your data.
  • We do not show advertising or use advertising trackers.
  • We do not require an account or ask for personal details to use the app.
  • We do not track you across apps or websites.

Children

Motorbook is intended for drivers and is not directed at children.

Third parties we rely on

  • DVLA and DVSA, for official vehicle, MOT and tax data.
  • Apple, for the App Store, payments and optional iCloud backup.
  • RevenueCat, to manage in-app purchases.
  • Cloudflare, which hosts our lookup service and this website.
  • Google, whose Analytics we use to measure how this website is used.
  • Resend, to deliver contact-form emails to us.

Your rights

Because your records live on your device, you are in control of them: you can edit or delete any vehicle, and removing the app deletes its data from your device. For anything sent to us by email, you can ask us to delete it by writing to privacy@motorbook.uk.

Changes to this policy

If this policy changes, we will update the date at the top of this page.
