The government is asking for views on how the transition to cleaner new cars should work. For most people who already own a petrol, diesel or hybrid car, nothing changes today.
What is being reviewed?
The zero-emission vehicle mandate sets yearly expectations for the proportion of new cars and vans that manufacturers sell as zero-emission vehicles. The review is looking at the trajectory to 2035, the flexibility available to manufacturers and possible technical changes to the scheme.
What should current drivers do?
There is no need to change a vehicle simply because the review has opened. Keep the car you have legal and well maintained: check its MOT, tax, insurance and service dates, and keep records of work completed.
What could change later?
The review could inform future amendments to the vehicle emissions trading rules. That does not mean a change has already been made. If you are considering an EV, compare your real use, charging access and total ownership cost rather than reacting to a policy headline.
