Selling: resale value

Well-maintained cars regularly sell for less than they should, simply because the paperwork didn't survive.

TL;DR

A documented service history is one of the first things UK buyers and dealers check on a used car, second only to mileage: it signals genuine mileage, early problem-catching, and an organised owner. Cars with incomplete or missing records routinely sell for less, even when the actual maintenance was done, simply because the proof didn’t survive.

Ask any dealer or private buyer what they check first on a used car listing, and “full service history” comes up almost immediately, right after mileage. It’s one of the few things that separates a well-looked-after car from one that’s been driven into the ground, at least on paper.

## Why buyers care so much

A documented history signals a few things at once: the car’s mileage is more likely to be genuine, problems were probably caught early rather than ignored, and the seller is organised enough to have kept records, which buyers read as a proxy for how the whole car was treated.

## What counts as “full” history

Realistically, it means a receipt or stamp for every service interval since new (or since you owned it), ideally with dates and mileage attached, not just a vague claim in the listing description.

## Where sellers lose value unnecessarily

Plenty of well-maintained cars sell for less than they should simply because the paperwork is incomplete or missing: the receipts existed, but the paper booklet went missing years ago, or a garage never wrote in it. The maintenance happened; the *proof* of it didn’t survive.

## Building a record that holds up

The safest approach is keeping records somewhere that can’t be misplaced or left in a car you’ve sold, with photos of receipts attached to each entry, and dates that are timestamped rather than handwritten after the fact.

## When it’s time to sell

Being able to export or show a clean, dated maintenance record on the spot, rather than digging through a shoebox, is a small thing that can meaningfully shorten negotiations and justify your asking price.

**Motorbook** keeps a timestamped record of every service, MOT, and receipt per vehicle, so you're never scrambling to prove a car's history when it's time to sell.
